The year is 2021, the distant future…
…and, yet, it all feels so familiar, so much like the late spring days of fifteen (15!) years, when my partner and I launched the first screening of And Now for Something Completely Cliché (2006), the youthful, irreverent, ultra low budget experimental feature-length faucumentary video-film that was, de facto, my self-produced “failed film school studies thesis film”—the partly built film school I attended in a suburban industrial area off Burnaby Lake, very much still under construction during my studies, imploded due to excessively optimistic (mis)management before I could complete my studies—and became my first feature project as writer and director, and everything in between.
The original poster from the private screening at the Pacific Cinematheque film institute.
We are all older now, the technologically and environmentally dystopic distant future is creeping ever closer to the present, and this conjunction of unpleasant biological and cultural realities seem to have—at least in me—stimulated a deeper reflection on of how I have lived, loved, and worked all these years, as an amateur cultural creative in this place I like to call the Land of #VanRE, or #VanRELand…
…and this desire has distilled, over the past year, into a deep desire to share the works I have produced so far—much of it still not widely, or at all, released—in a retrospective on the work, as well as reflections on the time, place and context they were created in.
And, so, in the coming months, I am planning to re-release all of my prior work up until now—some of it re-mastered or re-edited, some released for the first time—and, alongside, share my reflections on the geopolitical, socioeconomic, and cultural, context they were created in.
(Read more about the intent behind and themes explored in my work in my Artist Statement.)
The auto-retrospective, loosely titled “Reflections on (Mostly Unreleased) Works” will be unstructured, free-flowing, without false hope (i.e. marketing) or expectations but—like the better part of the strange days we are living in today—in the spirit of giving and sharing.
